The Music Curriculum
At FMPS our school motto is ‘Forever Making Pupils Shine’ and this statement pervades all areas of school life and the curriculum. In geography at FMPS, we aim to deliver a high-quality music curriculum which aims to inspire a creative and curiosity of music from around the world. The love of performing and understanding of how practise can impact on performance and improve musical skills.
What we intend our children to know
Our music curriculum develops knowledge of Listening and Appraising, Singing, Playing instruments, Improvisation, Composition and Performing.
It has been purposefully designed to ensure that the building blocks of knowledge taught are sequential and progressive. Children enjoy a wide range of engaging and carefully selected learning experiences and activities, during which they develop as young musicians.
How we will ensure pupils learn the knowledge that we have identified
At FMPS, our musical teaching is not linear. The lessons delivered are all part of our learning spiral to enable pupils to gain skills, knowledge and enriching opportunities that ensure all pupils can participate fully and enjoy themselves. Over time, children can both develop new musical skills and concepts and also regularly revisit these. Repetition of musical skills provides practise for pupils to improve and develop within the spiral and knowledge will be remembered in their long term memory.
Pupils will be able to play instruments, sing songs, compose and appraise music from around world. Remembering more over time and being able to apply their musical knowledge in new situations. Through assessment for learning, teaching will differentiate and challenge all learners to improve their own performance skills.
Pupils will learn to play an instrument in Year 3. This can be the recorder or ukulele in addition to percussion and xylophones. Those pupils that have enjoyed this experience can choose to learn: keyboard, guitar, ukulele, violin, clarinet or flute from Year 3 upwards. Pupils on FSM receive these without cost.
