At Framwellgate Moor Primary School, we are passionate about reading, which is the key to independent learning. We aim to give our children a life-long love of reading and use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get children off to a flying start in Reception. We believe all of our children can become confident and fluent readers and writers.
Read Write Inc Phonics is a method of teaching reading, which is centred around learning the sounds of the letters (phonics) and then blending them together to read words.
Through Read Write Inc lessons children will:
- Learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into understanding what they read.
- Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
- Learn to read words using “Fred Talk.”
- Learn to read words by blending the sounds together.
- Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out.
- Show that they understand the stories by answering ‘Find It’ and ‘Prove it’ discussion questions.

How does RWI work in our school?
The children in EYFS and KS1 are assessed by the Reading Leader (Miss Storey) and the RWI assessment team (Miss Storey, Miss French and Mrs Robinson), and then grouped according to their reading ability.
They children work in small groups with teachers and teaching assistants every day in EYFS and KS1. Answering questions, taking turns to talk and read with each other and giving positive praise to each other are key elements of every lesson. Our sessions start off as shorter timings in Reception and gradually increase through to Year 2.
At the end of each half term the children will be re-assessed to check they have made progress and will be grouped again for the following half term.
As a result, through the highly structured phonics sessions, children are well prepared for the National Phonics Screening Check which occurs towards the end of Year 1.
Some children in Years 3 and 4 who need extra support with their reading and phonics will come down to Key Stage 1 to join in with the sessions, they will also be assessed and placed in a group that matches their ability.
Any children in Years 5 and 6 at FMPS who still require extra support with their reading, will take part in the ‘Fresh Start’ modules, this will be led by Mrs Field every day. This ensures that these children receive all of the support they need to be confident readers.
In addition to the daily reading sessions, our staff are fully trained in delivering the Fast Track Tutoring element of RWI. This means any children who we notice are working below where they should be, will receive additional tutoring every day to keep up, rather than catch up. These are short burst sessions but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning.
Within the RWI scheme, children will be exposed to a range of spelling rules, as set out in the National Curriculum. Each story book contains words with appropriate spellings for their stage of reading, including common exception words. Children will learn to read and spell these words within their RWI sessions. Children learn to spell using ‘Fred Fingers’ and will be tested on their application of spellings each week to ensure rapid progress is being made.
Reading in Key Stage 2
Most children in Year 2 will finish their RWI journey and be able to read with accuracy, fluency, expression and understanding. They will have fostered a love of reading and be able to read for both purpose and pleasure.
These children will move on to the Oxford Owl Reading and Spelling scheme which they will work through in sequential order, according to their needs. The structured progression, offered by these schemes, aims to develop confidence and proficiency in both reading and spelling which can then be applied across the wider English curriculum.
Children will access Oxford reading scheme books (levels 8-20) in weekly guided reading group sessions. Children will move through each level, as appropriate, to ensure skills are built upon and reinforced at each stage. Sessions will focus on accuracy, fluency and expression alongside developing vocabulary and comprehension skills. Follow up activities may be given to encourage the rereading of texts to reinforce, and enhance, learning.
By the time children reach Year 6, children will be able to read with the accuracy, fluency, and understanding needed to access the range of texts they will be required to access, across all curriculum areas, in Key Stage 3. They will have the reading skills to enjoy the wealth of reading opportunities on offer, beyond the school curriculum.
Each week, children will undertake spelling tasks focusing on a particular spelling rule or pattern. Short daily sessions, with carefully structured activities, over the course of a week, provide children with the opportunity to: be introduced to new rules and letter patterns; apply their phonic knowledge; practise strategies to help learn and recall spellings with increasing accuracy; complete tasks to ensure understanding of the meaning of words.
By the time children reach Year 6, they will have knowledge of a wide range of spelling patterns, and be able to apply a range of spelling rules, to identify and self-correct efficiently within their independent work.
