Reception Class Gallery 2023-2024

This week in Reception, we have been focusing on People Who Help Us.

To kickstart the topic, we had a special visit from the Fire Service. Four fire fighters brought a fire engine to our school and parked it on the big yard. First, we learnt all about their role in helping people who are in need. We discovered that they don’t just tackle fires, they also rescue cats stuck in trees! We were then shown the firefighters uniform and found out that the firefighters only have one minute to get changed when an emergency call comes through. Miss Garthwaite was put to the test and successfully changed into the uniform with 15 seconds to go – wahoo!

We then took our learning outside, exploring the fire engine. We all had the chance to sit inside of the truck before manning the hose and squirting a cone. It was extremely powerful! The firefighters sounded the siren; it was so important that we covered our ears as it was rather loud. They then flashed the lights whilst we posed for a selfie!

We had a fantastic time and learnt so much. Thank you Durham and Darlington crew.

Jumpstart Jonny!

Reception were so lucky to have a special visitor in school… Jumpstart Jonny! We love dancing to Jumpstart Jonny on our interactive board and we couldn’t believe we were seeing him in real life. He got our blood pumping and our hearts racing, learning so many new moves and routines. Miss Mallen even had a dance battle! She won of course and we got a super special certificate for Reception…whoopa!

Just when we thought we had seen the last of Jumpstart Jonny, he came and surprised us in our classroom! He gave us all our own Jumpstart Jonny posters to take home and signed a big one for our classroom! We are very lucky indeed.

Forest School Fun

Reception look forward to Forest Fridays every week, where we have a focused activity to participate in. This week, Ladybirds were building their funky fingers by creating leaf silhouettes using squirt paint bottles. They loved hunting for leaves of different shapes and sizes before gluing them down and getting to work! We then had time to learn through play in the Forest.

Once back inside, we warmed up with hot chocolate and flicked through the photographs which Miss Mallen had captured throughout our session, discussing which part of the session we enjoyed the most.

Reception Extraordinary Garden

‘Reception have had a lovely afternoon in the sunshine planting new seeds and bulbs in their extraordinary garden. They learnt that plants need sunshine and water to help them grow. Now we are coming in to Spring, we decided it was a good time to plant some new seeds and watch them grow. They also created a tipi out of bamboo canes and are going to put some climbing plants in the pots to create their own den to relax, read a book and get their imagination flowing!’

Spring Walk 27.2.24

This week in Honeybee’s we have been learning about the different seasons, looking at the differences between them and how we know when the season changes. Today we went on a nature walk around the school grounds to spot the signs of winter and if there are any signs of the spring starting, we use all of our senses to look for signs, we looked high and low and find lots of  interesting signs. We used the classroom iPads and took some photos of the different things we found.

The Bear Hunt Sports Festival at Maiden Castle – 27.2.24

Today, Reception travelled via coach to Maiden Castle to participate in The Bear Hunt dance festival. The children were thrilled to sit on the top deck of the double decker bus and pointed out lots of familiar places.

To warm up, the children had to perform a range of moves to mimic a bear. The children were fantastic at utilising the hall space to execute a variety of movements. They really did warm their muscles up!

We listened to a tune from ‘The Bear Hunt’ and decided this was our song of the day. Reception recognised the lyrics from the original storybook which we had read in class on Monday. The coach taught us different moves which corresponded to the lyrics, these included marching, stretching and bending. We practised the full routine several times until it was perfect!

After that, we entered the big sports hall to participate in a circuit which had a range of bear themed activities including bear walking/balancing, parachute and teddy bear hide and seek using cones.

We then finished the session with an assault course, again moving like a bear around the equipment to represent each scene within the story. Finally, we searched for the bear and found him hiding on the top floor of the building before taking a selfie with him.

Reception had such a fantastic time this morning. The children showed excellent communication and team work skills throughout. I’m sure they will sleep well tonight!

Seven Stories Trip

In reception this week went on our first school trip to Seven Stories in Newcastle! We started our day getting on the coach to go all the way to Newcastle. We were super at lining up and listening to our instructions so we could get there safely. Ladybirds first workshop was at the galleries. We loved exploring the seven types of stories. Some of us dressed up and even pretended to be monsters! After our yummy dinner we went to our seasons workshop where we talked about everything we do and wear in the different seasons and even wrote our own acrostic poems! Honeybees completed the same activities the opposite way round.

We had such a fun day on our first school trip.

Reception Special Visitor

We have been signing and sending Valentines cards this week in Reception. The children were very curious about how letters travel from the postbox to our door, therefore we needed a real expert to explain this…so, Postman Gordon came to visit us!

He explained his role as a postman and showed us different artefacts which he uses daily, when working. We were lucky enough to even try parts of the uniform on. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience, asking plenty of questions to further their knowledge and were very excited to show Gordon the postbox which we had made in class.

We are now experts in the field and are raring to send many more letters far and wide.

Honeybees Snowy days

Reception had an amazing time enjoying the snow this week. They went outside, after getting wrapped up in lots of layers, and loved running around in the snow. Some children created snow balls, snowmen and some even slid down the small bank on the big yard. That was so much fun and the waterproofs definitely came in handy. What a special treat it was!

Ladybirds Community topic

To finish our community topic, we went for a walk around our local community.  The children were great remembering the safety rules of Stop, Look & Listen before crossing the roads.  The children could point out aspects for the community and recollected when they had visited certain buildings and areas which we passed.  We looked at the unfamiliar objects such as the phone box and discussed its purpose.  The children thoroughly enjoyed identifying the house numbers and comparing the colour of houses.  Once back in the classroom, we recalled our journey and some of the children drew what they saw on route.
