Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND

Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children and young people to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes.  The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. The children take an active role with setting their outcomes and discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO.  The children have regular meetings with staff to discuss their progress and support.

How will my child be able to contribute their views?

Children’s views are very important to us and the children know that they can speak to adults in school at any time.  There are additional opportunities to express views through the School Council Meetings and House Assemblies.

Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND

We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support.  Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process.

There is a range of ways this can be done, for example:

• Termly parents/ carers evenings;
• Ongoing discussions with a class teacher and/or SENCO;
• An ‘open-door’ policy, where parents and carers are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;
• Through regular reviews of their child’s SEN Support Plan/ EHC Plan.

How do we consult with our SEN pupils?

We offer an open door policy where you are welcome any time to make an appointment to meet with either the class teacher or SENCo and discuss how your child is getting on.  We offer advice and practical ways that you can help your child at home.  We provide regular homework to consolidate and extend work carried out at school.

It is imperative to us that Parents and School work in partnership and we aim to keep communication channels open and communicate regularly, especially if your child has complex needs.  This may be done through phonecalls, meetings or a home-school communication book which ensures that we can work together and that there is a constant line of communication.

Children on the SEN register have a SEN Support Plan which will have individual / group targets.  This can be sent home on a termly basis or discussed at Open Afternoon / separate meeting if required.  The targets set are what we aim to achieve before the next review cycle and the plan will also detail the strategies to be used.  Where appropriate teachers will discuss targets with children in a child-friendly way.

If your child has more complex SEND then they may have an Education, Health and Care Plan which will be reviewed annually and all relevant professionals invited in line with statutory requirements; however, we are happy to meet more frequently if this would be beneficial to the child.

How are parents involved with your school?

We enthusiastically encourage Parents to be involved in school life.  We welcome Parents at the beginning and end of a day and they are welcome to arrange additional dates to meet with the SENCo and teachers to discuss progress and provision.  Parents are invited to school performances, assemblies, sports events, transition activities, sponsored events, fundraisers and also homework workshops.
