SHINY READER

This week two children shared their favourite books with us.
Lexi shared 'Tangled' which is the story about Rapunzel and her magical long hair. Well done, Lexi for speaking confidently.
Zion was excited to share his story called 'Giant George and the Robin'. In this story a lonely giant makes friends with a robin. Great job, Zion!

Shiny Reader

Charlotte shared her favourite book with us this week. Just One of Those Days by Jill Murphy is a funny story about the Bear family. After a long night the bears wake up late, it's raining outside and Baby Bear is late for Nursery. Charlotte told us about all the events that happen during the Bear family's day. Thank you for sharing, Charlotte!

aRIS'S tIME TO SHINE

It was Aris' time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 20th June. He presented The Gruffalo's Child. Aris showed us his favourite page which showed the ‘big, bad mouse’ but Aris explained this character was not actually real, he was just pretending to be scary. Aris then went on to show us what the mouse actually looked like – he was much cuter!
Well done Aris, what a brilliant presentation!

Shiny Reader 

In Ladybirds this week our Shiny Reader presented two books: ‘Gigantosauraus,’ and ‘Wild About Dinosaurs.’ She explained her favourite page of ‘Wild About Dinosaurs’ was one with the T-Rex on because he looks fierce and awesome. In ‘Gigantosaurus,’ she told us about how the main character Bonehead was eaten but amazingly he survived! Ladybirds were very interested in all of the illustrations and our shiny reader really enjoyed describing them all!

It was Jido’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 23rd May. He presented the traditional tale ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Jido pointed to and named each goat successfully. What a lovely story you have shared, Jido. Well done!

Last week's Shiny Reader was Nuh with 'Chickens can't see in the dark'
 
This week Mathilda shared 'Through the Fairy Door' by Lars van de Goor. The story is all about being able to make a difference even if you're very small like a fairy! The book is full of beautiful detailed illustrations. Thank you for sharing, Mathilda.
 
It was Manav’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 16th May. He presented the traditional tale ‘Hansel and Gretel’. What a blast from the past! 
Manav pointed to each character and told us which one was Hansel and which was Gretel. He then went on to explain that he enjoys reading this book at home with his mam. Well done, Manav. You presented with great confidence.

This week our Shiny Reader shared 'Chickens can't see in the dark'. The story is all about a curious chicken who finds out that eating lots of carrots is a good way to help all her friends enjoy the night sky. We enjoyed reading the story at snack time.

Shiny Reader

It was Samuella’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 9th May.
Samuella presented ‘1,2,3 Do the Dinosaur’. She explained that this book is her favourite because it is all about dinosaurs – this being our current topic. Samuella then went on to tell us that her favourite dinosaur is a T-Rex because they have sharp claws. Thanks for the brilliant recommendation, Samuella. And a very well done!

It was Alfie’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 11th April.
Alfie presented ‘Say Please, Little Bear’. He showed us his favourite page and explained he loved the idea of the characters having a party. We then enjoyed our snack whilst Miss Mallen read us the story – we all sat and listened brilliantly. Thanks for the recommendation, Alfie!

It was George’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 4th April. 
George presented ‘Supertato Veggies Assemble’. George told us the book has veggies in which turn into superheroes. He explained it was his favourite book because Supertato captures Evil Pea who tried to destroy all of the supermarket goodies. Well done George. You presented with such confidence!

Joseph shared his book 'The Disgusting Sandwich' about a very hungry badger who keeps missing his chance to eat a quite nice sandwich. Lots of other animals spoil his meal until the sandwich is too disgusting to eat. Well done, Joseph!

This week, Gracie shared her favourite book 'Fox's Socks'. In the story Fox has lost his clothes all around the house. He finds them in unusual places, including his missing socks in the clock and box. Gracie loves this book because it's so funny and has lots of rhyming words.

It was Freya’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 28th March. Freya presented ‘I Don’t Want to Wait’ to her peers. Freya explained she loves reading this book because it has a Chinese teacher in it and the storyline if funny. Freya went on to explain that she borrowed this book from the library which she attends every Monday with her mam. Well done Freya. Thanks so much for sharing!

This week Nolan enjoyed sharing his story 'Who's not sleepy?'
He explained it's all about bedtime in the castle but Chip isn't sleepy. Nolan loves this story because the characters are so funny and make him laugh!

It was our time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 21st March. Our shiny reader presented ‘Geronimo’ by David Walliams. He explained he liked the book because the penguin shouted ‘geronimo’ when he sneezed which made him fly into the sky. Our shiny reader told us this book was his reward for being ‘Reader of the Week’ a few weeks back. He loved showing his peers the illustrations and explained each, one by one. Well done! We cannot wait to have a copy of our own.

SHINY READING PROJECT

In Ladybirds this week our Shiny Reader presented ‘There's No Such Thing As Monsters’.  He explained that this book was his favourite due to the characters in the story which remind him of The Three Bears within the Goldilocks fairytale. Our shiny reader enjoyed flicking through the illustrations, describing the other characters and settings. Brilliant work! We look forward to having a copy of our own for the reading area.

This week Praise shared her book 'Little Pink Ballerina'. At the start of the story Pink Ballerina can't manage to whirl, twirl and leap. She nearly gives up trying but then manages to help a little boy get his balloon back from a tall tree.

World book day 2025

Honeybees and Ladybirds thoroughly enjoyed sharing their favourite books on World Book Day

The Bear Hunt Sports Festival at Maiden Castle

 
On Tuesday 11th March, Reception travelled via bus to Maiden Castle to participate in The Bear Hunt Sports Festival. The children were thrilled to ride on the double decker bus and pointed out lots of familiar places. 
 
To warm up, the children had to complete an obstacle course which required movements linked to the Bear Hunt story. The children were fantastic at utilising the hall space to execute a variety of movements. They really did warm their muscles up! To finish, we practised our stop/start skills by playing What’s the Time Mr Bear?
 
After that, we entered the big sports hall to participate in a circuit which had a range of bear themed activities including bear walking/balancing, parachute and teddy bear hide and seek using cones. 
 
Then, we headed outside to read The Bear Hunt aloud and completed another obstacle course which linked to elements of the story. This ended in the children being covered in bubbles! 
 
Finally, we entered the dance hall to show off our moves. The dance game was very similar to ‘snap’. We then climbing aboard the bus and heading back to school.

SHINY READING PROJECT 

It was Aisha’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 21st February. Aisha presented ‘Princess and the Shoe’. She described the characters and settings in much detail before showing us what each looks like within the illustrations. She told us she loves the story because it is based on a princess and that is what she loves to dress up as the most. Finally, Aisha told us how this book was her prize for being ‘Reader of the Week’ a few weeks back. Well done Aisha!

Reception Visit Seven Stories. 

On Thursday 20th, Reception visited Seven Stories. We started by climbing aboard a huge coach which took us from school to Ouseburn. Our session started with a traditional tales workshop. Our focus was the Gingerbread Man. We found clues which served as the ingredients to our story. We eventually found the run away Gingerbread Man before colouring in our own - we created some fabulous pieces of art! Next, we created and structured our own story. After lunch, we had the opportunity to explore the various floors which led us to ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and ‘Mog’ rooms. We had one final story before heading back to school. What a brilliant day we all had.

Today it was Lana's turn to share her favourite book in Honeybees class. She chose a super book for Valentine's Day called 'Light Up My Heart'. 
She explained how the story is all about showing love for others in many different ways. We all agreed with the page which said 'The best gift of all is your kindness. It's free!'

SHINY READING PROJECT

It was Makka’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 14th February.  Makka presented ‘Unicorn’ to the class and explained why this was her favourite to read at home. Makka enjoys the part where the mermaid and fairy catch all the diamonds and share them with the other characters. She told us that she had bought the book whilst out shopping with her mam. Well done Makka, we loved hearing all about your book!

SHINY READING PROJECT

Matthew and Rushank shared their books during our Shiny Reading Time today.
 
Matthew chose 'The Dinosaur That Pooped A Superhero'. He explained that he loves this story because it's so funny. His favourite part is where Zap shoots lasers. This story really makes him laugh!
 
 
Rushank told us all about 'The Lion Inside' . He explained it's a story with a lesson because the mouse tries to be so brave and the lion is scared of him. 
 
Well done Matthew and Rushank! You did a great job.

SHINY READING PROJECT

It was Josie’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 7th February.  Josie presented ‘The Fairytale Hairdresser and Cinderella’ to the class and confidently explained why this was her favourite to read at home. She told us that she really enjoys this book because it has princess' in, and it is a fairytale. Josie went on to explain that she had originally borrowed the book from the library but because she loved reading it so much, she bought one for herself. Well done Josie!

SHINY READING PROJECT

It was Colby’s time to shine in Ladybird class on Friday 31st January.  Colby presented ‘Hairy Maclary’ to the class and confidently explained why this was his favourite to read at home. He told us that this book was gifted to him by his childminder who had looked after him since he was a baby. Colby went on to explain that he thoroughly enjoys identifying the house numbers within the illustrations and spotting the rhyming words. Well done Colby, we loved hearing all about your book!  We cannot wait to have a copy of it in our classroom library.

exploring energy through electricity

This week, Reception have been exploring energy through electricity. We spoke about the items in our homes and classroom which were powder by electricity; there were many! The children then took their knowledge into provision by explore different equipment which are powered by electricity/batteries, as well at non-electrical appliance/resources. The children were brilliant at categorising the items into electrical and non-electrical.
