LLAMAS MATHS CAFE
The Llamas and their parents took part in the maths cafe this week. Tackling maths challenges based on money, time, place value and shape. The children enjoyed the activities and a big thank you to the parents for coming along.
TURTLES COME DINE WITH ME
It was Turtles turn for Come Dine with Me this week, cooking their 3 course meal. The children cooked Red Pepper Soup to start, No Yeast Pozza for main and Lemon Cheesecake for dessert.
This week, Llamas and some Y5s stepped into the kitchen to make their own 3 course meal. They started with a red pepper soup with varying levels of spice. For mains they served up a no yeast pizza and finally for dessert they made 'Yummy golden syrup flapjacks'. The class then scored each dish out of 5 with the winners being announced in a few weeks.
TIN ARTS
Llamas enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Tin Arts group company linking science with dance. Focusing on the theme of Space, they developed dance moves to represent the planets and other elements of dance including partner work. They then watched a fabulous performance choreographed and performed by members of the company. Within it, the damcer incorporated moves (which the children had practised in the first part) and much more. The children were mesmerised!
Afterwards, the children had the opportunity to sit down and pose questions to the choreographer and science expert. The whole session was very much enjoyed.
COP29 Conference
Year 6 took part in the COP conference hosted by OASES. The children found out what COP is and the importance of it. The class took part in discussions adding their points which can be seen above, for questions such as; what are our thoughts about climate change, what do we think we could do to improve it and what we could do ourselves to help climate change. The conference had a number of videos about what other countries are doing to combat climate change and we heard from Baku where COP29 has been happening about what key points were being discussed.
Year 5 and 6 had their WW1 session this morning. It was extremely insightful to learn more about the roles of men and women in the early 1900s leading up to The Great War. We were able to try on costumes and explore some artefacts that soldiers had during the war.
FOOD TASTING
This half term in DT, the children will be competing in a 'Come Dine with me' style challenge and before selecting their menu they took part some food tasting. The children had to taste different foods and see which flavours complimented and enhanced each other.
As part of our online safety session this week, year 5 and 6 have been thinking about trust. Who we trust online and with what information. The children created their own diamond using words that they associate with trust.
Year 5 and 6 have loved coming dressed as their favourite characters today, we completed lots of activities and celebrated all things reading.
MAYAN ARTWORK
Year 5&6 continued their art topic, using their Mayan way (spirt companion) name to create a piece of artwork using Chiriascuro. They have been studying the use of light and dark (Chiriascuro). They used masking tape to mark out the name before using charcoal to colour the background. After this, they used rubbers to creste the light elements.
STEMFEST
The Year 6s, visited the Beacon of Light, which hosted STEMFest. This event was hosted to inspire young people and show them the great opportunities and careers on their doorstep. The event had 4 different zones; Space, Cyber Security/Technology, Environment & Energy and Engineering and Manufacturing. Careers such as wind turbine technician, forestry, welder, and many more were showcased to the children. All in all a brilliant day!
Year 5 and 6 had a brilliant day at Beamish Museum this week! The children split into groups and were able to explore the different areas. In the 1900s town, the children saw how we used to live and sample the local shops and services such as: the bakers, the sweet shop, the police station, bakers and many more.
Each group took part in a workshop where they had to find out what had happened to a young boy who had gone to war at the age of 15. They needed to ask different people close to the boy about him to gather the information, this was all after running a few drills in the square.
The children also visited the 1900s pit village. Here, they saw what school was like and played with the old playground toys, before heading down the mine and seeing how cramped and dark it really was. The 1940s farm was a firm favorite with the children as they were able to see the different animals that were kept at the time such as: pigs, ponies and horses.
Year 5 and 6 investigated how prisms changed the way light travelled and how colour can change the way we see objects. The children found that the light from the torches refracted when it hit the prisms and created a rainbow on their books.
